I chatted to lots of fellow visitors, most there either to train as yoga instructors or simply experience practising yoga on the banks of the Ganges, to harness the enormous spiritual energy that Hindus and spiritual tourists believe the river to have. On my first evening I started to see what they were talking about. I walked along the banks of the river to join a puja. Each evening between 6pm and 7pm pujaris conduct an elaborate and evocative ritual involving fire, incense and water, giving thanks to Ma Ganga. I sat on the ghat, its steps leading down to the river, and the fading light of the sun briefly turned the water purple then pink as the pujaris twirled bowls of flames to the accompaniment of a hypnotic drone.
