Shiva Kochale, a 13-year-old Indian expatriate from Oman, had always been fascinated by the thrill of adventure. Recently, he chose to turn his school break into an opportunity to pursue his dream of trekking to the Mt Everest base camp with his mother, Sonal, a yoga therapist. This inspiring journey not only showcased the teenager’s determination but also highlighted the all-encompassing spirit of Oman.
Conquering the Unlikely Terrain
The trek, which spanned 130km from Ramechhap to the base of the world’s tallest mountain, took place in the midst of unforgiving weather conditions, including fog, mist, snow, hail, and freezing temperatures. Despite the treacherous terrain, Shiva demonstrated an unflinching spirit, pushing through the challenges with an ambitious attitude and unwavering resolve. The duo’s determination to reach the summit was motivated by a desire to test their endurance, as well as to pay tribute to the sultanate’s love for adventure.
The Journey Begins in Oman
The trek’s origin story began in Oman’s mountains and wadis, where Sonal, a yoga therapist, was introduced to trekking by late Hussam al Balushi of ‘Adventure Zone’ in Muscat. “Hussam introduced me to Oman’s beauty — from Jebel Shams to Wadi Shab. His encouragement laid the foundation for this dream. We owe him a lot,” Sonal said. The mother-son duo’s passion for adventure gradually grew, and they eventually embarked on a shared journey to conquer the Himalayas.
The Power of Yoga
To prepare for the trek, Shiva and Sonal relied on yoga, incorporating breathing techniques, endurance, and static yoga poses into their routine. “Our training revolved around breathing techniques, endurance, and static yoga poses. Sun salutations, mountain walks, and pranayama became part of our routine,” Sonal explained. This unconventional approach to training helped the duo build the physical and mental stamina required to overcome the challenges of the trek.
A Bond Strengthened by Adversity
The journey to the Everest base camp was not without its challenges, including moments of doubt and self-discovery. “There were moments when we doubted ourselves — heavy snowfall, steep climbs, low oxygen, and one day I even had a fever. But the bond between us helped us push through. Shiva supported me when I was down, and later, I was his rock when he struggled,” Sonal said. This experience deepened their bond, teaching them the importance of trust, discipline, and love.
A Tribute to Oman’s Spirit
Reaching the base camp surrounded by Himalayan peaks was a moment of quiet reflection, filled with pride and accomplishment. “It wasn’t just a check mark on a list. We hoisted the flag of Oman there with pride. That moment surrounded by nature’s grandeur — was humbling. Climbing Everest Base Camp together has deepened our bond. We had to rely on each other more than ever. Every step was a reminder of how far love, discipline, and belief can take you,” Sonal said. This journey served as a testament to the all-encompassing spirit of Oman, where the love for adventure truly takes root.
Sonal, as a yoga therapist, reaffirmed her core beliefs through this experience, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and trust in one’s abilities. “This trek tested every ounce of that belief. It’s something we’ll cherish forever.” She hopes to inspire other families across India and Oman to pursue their dreams, no matter how daunting they may seem. “I want young people — especially from India and Oman — to know that adventure is for everyone. With the right mindset and preparation, you can move mountains, quite literally.”
Sonal’s response to what’s next was clear: This is just the beginning. We want to continue exploring and inspiring others, one peak at a time. Her advice to those uncertain about pursuing their dreams is simple yet powerful: Dreams come with risks. But real accomplishment lives on the other side of fear. Prepare, stay grounded, and trust your every breath. Great things happen when courage meets consistency. “Dreams come with risks.
